To Participate in the K9 program, officers must undergo a rigorous selection process. Once selected, the handler is then paired with a K9 partner. The LBK9OA pays for the dog, which can cost as much as $12,500.

While the Police Department pays for training and on-duty medical expenses, the officers absorb other expenses pertaining to the dog’s upkeep.

Officers are also personally responsible for the off-duty veterinary bills. The Association helps officers offset these costs and pays for dog food.
